Stefan Schliebs, PhD candidate
Stefan has received a Diploma in Computer Science
(Masters degree equivalent) at the University of Leipzig,
Germany, in 2006. In his Diploma thesis he has worked on
neural network based agents and genetic algorithms. He is
currently enrolled in the final year of a PhD program in
Computer Science at the Auckland University of Technology in
New Zealand under the supervision of Prof Nikola Kasabov and
Dr Michael Defoin-Platel. In March 2010, he has submitted
his thesis and is now waiting for the viva (final examination) in order to complete
his studies. During his PhD time he has explored a
the areas of evolutionary computation with a
focus on probabilistic methods, namely Estimation of
Distribution Algorithms (EDA). He has investigated these
methods in the context of feature selection problems and
parameter optimization of spiking neural networks.
The recent developments in the area of spiking neural
networks are in particular interesting to Stefan. He is
interested in the neuro-scientific aspects of neural
modelling but also their applications for real world problems as
novel computational tools.
